The Olmec were an ancient Mesoamerican civilization that flourished in the tropical lowlands of what is now Mexico, particularly in the modern-day states of Veracruz and Tabasco, during the Pre-classic period (approximately 1400 BCE to 400 BCE). The Olmec civilization is considered one of the earliest complex societies in Mesoamerica, and they are often regarded as the "Mother Culture" of the region due to their significant influence on later cultures.   The Olmec civilization is generally associated with the Early Formative period in Mesoamerican chronology, spanning from around 1400 BCE to 400 BCE.
