The Dead Sea Scrolls: Decoding History’s Greatest Manuscripts

The Dead Sea Scrolls are a collection of Jewish texts that were discovered between 1947 and 1956 in the vicinity of the Dead Sea, near the ancient settlement of Qumran. The discovery is considered one of the most significant archaeological findings of the 20th century. The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls can be traced back to the late 1940s when a Bedouin shepherd named Muhammad edh-Dhib made the initial discovery in the vicinity of the Dead Sea. According to the widely accepted account, in 1947, Muhammad edh-Dhib and his cousin were tending to their goats in the vicinity of the Dead Sea near a place called Qumran. One of the goats wandered away, and as the young shepherd went to retrieve it, he threw a stone into a cave and heard the sound of breaking pottery. Curious about the sound, Muhammad edh-Dhib entered the cave and discovered several clay jars containing ancient scrolls. Recognizing their potential significance, he and his cousin retrieved some of the scrolls from the jars. ...
